Florida State on tap...

We've got a huge game coming up in Tallahassee this weekend at noon eastern on Lincoln Financial, or CW 13 in Atlanta. Whereas two weeks ago we were moaning & complaining about the season, now we have a quarterback, Jameel Sewell, that some are comparing to Vince Young and we have a 2-game ACC winning streak going. With the Seminoles down, this could be our year to break the "curse" of never having won in the state of Florida before. However, with FSU losing so many, they may be upset and out for revenge on someone...

Football, football, football

So I'm in some withdrawal because there is no Tuesday or Wednesday football this week. You know those ESPN Monday Night Football commercials where they countdown until Monday? I'm the opposite...Sunday afternoon and Monday night just tide me over until college starts up again. Even if the game is bad...for instance last week was Louisiana Lafayette v. Florida Atlantic, I love watching (in sparkling HD presented by Pioneer Plasma no less). Thursday should be great though...Clemson v. Virginia Tech.

We have a HUGE game against NC State this weekend....arguably our most winnable game the rest of the season. Being at home I think we can do it but it all depends on Sewell. Some call Sewell the next Vince Young, but I'm not going that far just yet. We need 3 of 4 victories to hit bowl season again. Unlikely, but not impossible, seeing that VT, Miami & FSU are all down this year.

It's suddenly turned winter. My overseeded ryegrass lawn is due for its first cutting this week w/the freshly sharpened blade (my lawn mower place in East Cobb is closing though so next year I have to take it to Lithia Springs in Douglass County). The yard is greening up pretty good although it's a bit patchy in some areas. I hope that fills in before the dead of winter begins.

Also Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend, but it starts back the 2nd sunday in March, giving us a few extra weeks of nighttime sun. Good stuff.

Another good episode of Friday Night Lights, another miserable football weekend...

FNL talked about recruiting tonight...trying to "induce" (w/money & houses, etc.) a Katrina refugee to play football for Dillon...that was a huge problem in the late 80's (& probably still today) in Texas. Westlake does not do that to my knowledge, but there was an apartment complex on the edge of town where some of the football players lived...presumably the only affordable place in town.

Virginia blew a 20 point lead...the Falcons blew a big lead, and not that I really care, but the Cardinals did it last night. Argh. And Vandy beat Georgia...in the words of Dick Enberg, OH MY!

Awful football picks

Ok, so UVa got creamed by East Carolina. Yikes. I was 1-15 on football picks...at least UAB won...haha. I was happy that Auburn got beat though, but then LSU and Georgia had to screw that up by losing and giving Florida the upper hand. Texas had a huge win in the Red River shoot-out last night as well.

So the snowstorm predicted for the Monday Night Football game in Denver didn't exactly happen, but the weather was miserable nonetheless. MNF is kind of something to tide me over until college starts up again. Unfortunately this week there is no Tuesday or Wednesday game, so I'll have to tide myself over with Friday Night Lights and Two A Days.

I'm off to Home Depot to get ANOTHER kickplate (long story), some weatherstripping, and hopefully a fix for our alarm system window contacts (hopefully the burglars out there aren't reading!).

Huge Football Weekend

Virginia v. East Carolina (in Greenville...ACC v. C*USA)
Texas/Oklahoma (Go Horns...national coverage on ABC in Dallas at the Fairgrounds)
Tennessee/Georgia (Go Dawgs, & to hell with Tennessee! (but I'm VERY nervous about this game)).
LSU/UF (Geaux Tigers...beat the jean-short and tank-top wearing rednecks from Gainesville)
Austin Westlake High v. Bastrop High (Chaps NEED a win after an unusual District loss to Austin High (which has spawned Facebook groups to pop up as a result) ...also the big showdown with the Buda Hays Rebels is coming up and that's a toss-up.
Wake Forest v. Clemson (who would have thought that this would be a crucial game in determining the ACC Champ from the Atlantic Division??)

I'll be listening to my Wahoos as best I can on 1140 WVRA once the sun goes down. It's on CSTV but we don't get that & I'm not going to order it for one game. Argh.

Lufkin/Longview (Texas high school football) was on last night and is being replayed many times this weekend...wow, that brings back the memories.

Of course the few times I root for FSU they lose...I needed FSU to beat N.C. State so we wouldn't look so bad, but it was not to be. Chesty Amato has Daddy Bowden's number. So does Son Bowden at Clemson to some degree. I hope we beat FSU, but we've never won a game in the state of Florida before (or west of the Mississippi I believe).

I think I have a Facebook problem...I've been spending WAY too much time on there lately, and I have no idea why. But on the positive side I've caught up with (Westlake) high school friends, rowing friends from college and my parents' friends' kids from Cincinnati.

Friday Night LIghts

I watched the show on NBC last night & thought it to be pretty good. The Dillon Panthers are the team, and they play at Pflugerville (Austin) Kuempel Stadium, which has been renamed to Herrman Stadium (not coincidentally the name of P'ville's head coach). Their first opponent was the Westurby Chapparals...sounds very close to my alma mater, the Westlake Chapparals...both teams are red, white & blue and have a logo on the Astroturf that is a red "W" with a blue chapparal (roadrunner) on it. Also, the first episode tackled (pardon the pun) the issue where a player was paralyzed after a strong hit...this occurred when Westlake played San Antonio James Madison High in 2003 and a Westlake player tackled Madison's David Edwards. All in all a good show & I'll watch it next week...brings back the memories.

I heard a new song today, "'Bama Breeze" by Jimmy Buffett. It's about a beach bar (a generic one, not one in particular), but the video is set at the Fire Dog Saloon in Mississippi after Katrina. Both the song & the video are excellent & remind me of Beach Weeks in North Myrtle Beach at the Helms Vista (which was a nasty hotel that has now been torn down to build luxury condos).

The big Tennessee/Georgia game is this weekend...I'll definitely be watching after we finish our "Foyers" dinner. Also ECU/UVa is at 6 PM which I'll have to listen to on 1140 WRVA after dark because our cable system doesn't even offer the option to purchase CSTV...you CAN get it in VA however, not that it helps me. I think UVa can pull it out, but it'll be tough...for some reason I was thinking ECU was D-II, but it turns out they're in the C*USA.
